Douglas Slocombe was one of the most respected British cinematographers of all time. Cutting his teeth as a newsreel cameraman during WWII, Slocombe went on to work for Ealing Studios. Eventually, he went freelance, working with the likes of Roman Polanski, Joseph Losey, Norman Jewison, and more before working with Steven Spielberg on RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK – during which he is reported to have never used a light meter. Indeed, the sweeping shots and expansive cinematography in RAIDERS are two of the key elements that lend it its swashbuckling, Old Hollywood charm.
